Embarrassing: Samsung Hires Mob to Protest Outside Apple Store

Jibes at the iPhone and its users clearly aren’t enough to attract the attention of Apple’s customers, so Samsung is taking a more direct approach. Today, as if the overly long default email signature for new Samsung phones is not ridiculous enough, the Korean company sent a screaming flashmob equipped with big “Wake Up” signs to protest outside of an Apple retail store in Sydney, Australia.

We know that Samsung is readying the launch of its ‘Next Galaxy’ smartphone, which is due to be unveiled on May 3, but the company may also be working on creating buzz for the handset in Australia.

In what is undoubtedly Samsung’s most ridiculous move yet, it sent a coach load of people dressed in black to protest outside of an Apple retail store. The message, which was plastered on the side of the coach and on signs help by the mob, was clear: Wake Up!

The rather embarrassing campaign is thought to be part of Samsung’s Galaxy S III marketing, organized by an Australian creative agency called Tongue. The company is behind the ‘Wake Up’ website, which counts down the number of seconds to a launch:

The JavaScript countdown is set to expire at 3pm on May 6, three days after Samung’s ‘Next Galaxy’ launch on May 3. This would suggest Australian’s will be seeing the new Galaxy S III handset hit on that date, 72 hours after it is unveiled in the UK.

Samsung recently unveiled the latest part of its ‘Next Galaxy’ countdown on its smartphone teaser site, launching a new video that highlights the fact the company’s new smartphone will help ‘you stand out from the crowd’. The message was displayed alongside a herd of sheep, providing yet another dig at Apple and iPhone owners.

By coincidence, the Australian blogger Blunty was in the store when the flashmob arrived and managed to capture some of the cringeworthy chanting on video, seen above.

I must say, the video is awkward and sends the wrong message, and Samsung’s latest marketing stunt makes it’s “you’ve been Samsunged” campaign look genius.
