iPhone Siri, an integrated application in iPhone 4S, is the latest development that brings natural language user interface technology to a whole new level – in mass scale. Which means in coming years, most of iPhone or any Smartphone users will stand a chance (or already?) to enjoy artificial intelligence in similar application.
However, is it really useful in our daily life? I doubt that.
Reason, would you be constantly talking to your phone to give commands in a train or quiet office? It looks a bit like a mental patient to me. But most people will find it extremely comfortable to talk to a phone inside a car. In a private closet, we are more comfortable to speak out. In this case, “iCar Siri” (code name for iVergeD) clearly has the advantage over iPhone Siri.
Imagine when you step into your car, right before engine ignition, all your emails, contacts, multimedia contents, calendars, and etc are all synchronized with the car radio system. iPhone Siri is integrated as core brain to start the communication with you,
“Hello, I’m your personal assistant, iCar Siri. How may I be of service?”
“Which Japanese restaurant is the nearest to my current location?”, you begin questioning, or
“What is the traffic condition to Washington Boulevard?”
“It’s raining currently, road will be slippery and there is a traffic congestion 2km up ahead. What would you like to do?”
“Play me the song, Set Fire to the Rain.”
Just like big hit series back in 1982, Knight Rider, which starred an artificially intelligent car, is able to communicate and assist its owner in fighting crime. Days counting down to granting that wishes (exclude the crime-fighting function of course) seem to be earlier than you could ever imagine. With iCar Siri, everything is just possible – right from vehicle conditions, route recommendations, speed limits reminder to weather forecast, and etc. What’s more if it could even remind you to buy a gift from certain shopping mall nearby for mother’s birthday which is in next month. It all depends on the technology platform compatibility between mobile phone and automobile.
Car multimedia system with capability in communicating with other vehicles are currently existing on the market, thanks to popularization of Global Positioning System (GPS) and emerging networks development. I would expect the growth of vehicular communication system to be speeding up tremendously in near future if the integration of Siri (or similar application) is successfully embedded in a car.
“Would you still need a driver then?”
