The full-length, plot-heavy trailer for ‘The Bourne Legacy‘ showcases Jeremy Renner in assassin mode, while teasing out intrigue and revealing some serious stunts.
“There was never just one!“
And now we finally get to see just how true that is with the all-new trailer for The Bourne Legacy which seems to have direct ties to Matt Damon’s last turn as Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum. This new trailer also finally gives us a look at the film’s story and gets co-stars Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton in on the action with franchise characters played by David Strathairn and Joan Allen also appearing.

Judging by the Legacy trailer, Aaron Cross is forced to run for his life when Bourne’s public exposure of Treadstone leads one of the minds behind the program, a man called Byer (Edward Norton) to “clean up the situation” – namely, by killing every agent and/or assassin connected to Treadstone. While evading government forces that want him dead, Cross… er, crosses paths with a fellow assassin (Oscar Isaac) and eventually joins forces with a Treadstone scientist (Rachel Weisz), in order to keep both of them alive.
One thing this trailer definitely displays is Bourne Legacy‘s efforts at world-building. Rather than the insular story of Bourne on the run, you have Aaron Cross looking for answers, mixing it up with Treadstone’s rank and file, as well as a widespread plan of assassination eradication.
“Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg.“
The film is also definitely not shy about using Jason Bourne as part of its plot, which is both a cheat and a brilliant idea. Matt Damon, who, depending on who you ask, was either not asked back for this installment or decided not to come back, must be fuming right now considering the amount of screentime his character gets in the trailer alone; while leaving a gaping hole open for Damon to reprise Bourne in future installments.
Director Gilroy appears to have traded in Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass’ shaky cam approach to shooting action – for a steadier hand/faster cutting style. Depending on how you approach it: one could argue that Gilroy looks to bring some intriguing new material to the table, while also offering a fresh take on recycled parts from the Bourne trilogy – or, that Bourne Legacy so far comes off as a standard rehash of its predecessors.
Some fans of the Bourne Identity trilogy immediately decried the next installment that will not include the series’ star Matt Damon as its titular hero. But the latest trailer for The Bourne Legacy speaks right to their concerns, scolding, “You think that Jason Bourne was the whole story?…There’s a lot more going on here,” though it’s not hard to understand why fans of the original trilogy feel bound to Damon’s Bourne; his deft blending of pathos with a frightening physical dexterity made him a compelling hero unlike any we’d ever seen before.
The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy.
The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.
“The legacy lives on…“
The stakes have been raised, and Bourne’s Legacy will be tested. How it pays off will be revealed on August 3rd.
For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.
