“The Magic Life” is about those who are willing to risk everything to take the road not normally taken. Sometimes the risk pays off, sometimes it doesn’t.
If you’re looking for a solid documentary that might inspire some more dedication into your most cherished and possibly lucrative hobbies, check out Make Believe, a coming of age journey set in the subculture of magic that follows six of the world’s best young magicians as they battle for the title of Teen World Champion. However, while the documentary focuses on some young kids following their dream, it’s moreso about the competition and lead-up to their performance.
Now a new documentary, The Magic Life, is set in the same world but is mostly about following the dreams of magicians to make a career out of their tricks.

The Magic Life follows a 17-year old kid (Nelson Cheng, who’s also directing the documentary) attending a Beijing magic school, a 25-year old magic man performing on Hollywood Boulevard, and a 32-year old man with an MBA who flat out quits his job in order to perfect his craft for a career in magic, something many seem to scoff at. Can they pull off the biggest trick of their lives and become working magicians?
It looks like quite an inspiring documentary, even if it doesn’t look like the most polished film, but since Cheng is pretty busy focusing on his magic, I suppose we can cut him some slack.
The film played at the 2012 Nashville Film Festival this year.
There was a time in my life when I was a kid that I wanted to be a magician. My parents bought me all kinds of books on magic, and I would constantly practice the magic tricks. I’m amazed and inspired by what magicians can do. Being a magician is not an easy path; these guys have to work their asses off and most of them have to travel a rough road. This new doc takes us on that journey of aspiring illusionists who want to do what they love.
