Despite recent reports circulating online, it appears at least one expected cast member from Iron Man 2 will not be appearing in Iron Man 3. Though she apparently is at her best in The Avengers, Scarlett Johnasson says that Black Widow will not be appearing in the franchise sequel.
In just under two weeks time director Joss Whedon’s comic book epic The Avengers will be released in theaters. A few short weeks after the U.S. opening of the long-awaited big screen depiction of The Avengers, Marvel’s next movie - Iron Man 3 - will go into production.
Though the cast of the next addition to the Tony Stark saga is filling up rather quickly with a bevy of notable and formidably talented actors, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will not be joining the adventures on this one. The actress reveals that she would not be appearing in Iron Man 3 at the start of the interview with her and The Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo, at The Avengers Los Angeles press event last week. Johansson did, however, pitch the idea of a Jason Bourne-esque super hero movie featuring the Black Widow character.
Without spoiling anything from the film, we can say that Whedon gives Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow a rich back-story in The Avengers and plenty to fill out the rather rough character sketch that Iron Man 2 provided. We can unequivocally say that I would love to see the Black Widow/Hawkeye film that The Avengers so deftly lays the foundation for.
I suppose with the recent casting of Jessica Chastain as a “sexy scientist” there’s only room for one titillating redhead in the cast, but more practically, given that the character isn’t really needed to continue Iron Man’s story and was one of the weaker parts in Iron Man 2, as it set up for The Avengers more than anything, this is probably a good news.
The Hulk was another great success in the film and we predict that Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner will be a fan-favorite once The Avengers has been released. The addition of the motion-capture technology to create The Hulk helps Ruffalo with his character’s superhuman counterpart in a way that we have not previously seen. Some fans were initially resistant to the recasting, but I believe they will ultimately be more than pleased with The Hulk that Whedon and Ruffalo have created. The actor even endured the embarrassment of the motion capture leotard in order to bring the SMASH more fully to life.
Opening May 4, director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Selvig.
Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures Marvel’s The Avengers — the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.
Look for The Avengers to hit theaters (2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D) around the U.S. on May 4th, 2012.
