Bernie Trailer – Jack Black in Richard Linklater’s Newest Dark Comedy

A Renaissance man, a community leader, a mortician who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a wealthy widow that leads to fatal consequences.

There are people in town, honey, that woulda shot her for 5 dollars.

Millennium has debuted the official trailer on Yahoo for Richard Linklater’s new film Bernie, starring Jack Black as the beloved local mortician in a small Texas town. Even the town’s richest, meanest widow adores him. He strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow (MacLaine). You can’t get anybody to say a bad word about Bernie—even after he commits a nasty crime. This sounds like it might have a Coen Bros murder mystery brilliance to it, or so we can only hope. Bernie one day kills the wealthy widow but no one in the town suspects for months because he goes to great lengths to create the illusion that she’s alive. Shirley MacLaine plays the widow who, frankly, seems like nothing but an annoying bitch, and Matthew McConaughey plays the town’s DA, Danny Buck Davidson, who’s after him. Looks mildly funny, not bad.

Bernie is directed by Texan indie filmmaker extraordinaire Richard Linklater, of films like Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise/Sunset, Waking Life, Fast Food Nation and A Scanner Darkly previously. This was co-written by Linklater with newcomer Skip Hollandsworth based on a true story. This premiered at last year’s LA Film Fest, and will play at SXSW coming up. It will then be released limited by Millennium Entertainment on April 27th this spring.
