‘The Dark Knight Returns‘ Part 1 Trailer - Frank Miller’s best selling iconic graphical novel is brought to animated life, starring Peter Weller as the aged Caped Crusader.
One of the most influential comics of all time, the Dark Knight Returns is set in a near future where Batman is retired and Gotham City has slid into a dystopian state ruled by a gang of hooligans called The Mutants. The 55-year old Bruce Wayne is forced to don the cape once more, this time partnering with a female Robin to not only stop the Joker but keep the peace when the city falls into chaos after being hit by an electromagnetic pulse.

…it’s been a decade since Bruce Wayne hung up his cape, following most of the other superheroes who had been forced into retirement. Facing the downside of middle age, a restless Bruce Wayne pacifies his frustration with race cars and liquor – but the bat still beckons as he watches his city fall prey to gangs of barbaric criminals known as The Mutants.
The return of Harvey Dent as Two-Face finally prompts Wayne to once again don the Dark Knight’s cowl, and his dramatic capture of the villain returns him to crime-fighting – simultaneously making him the target of law enforcement and the new hope for a desolate Gotham City. Particularly inspired is a teenage girl named Carrie, who adopts the persona of Robin and ultimately saves Batman from a brutal attack by the Mutant leader. Armed with a new sidekick, and re-energized with a definitive purpose, the Dark Knight returns to protect Gotham from foes new…and old.
The four-book mini-series was praised for its mature and psychological take on superheroes, establishing the grisly and gloomy tone of the contemporary Batman universe back in the 1980s. It set a violent and realistic tone in superhero comics and served as a big influence on Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie trilogy, the last of which opens July 20. Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises even borrows plot elements from Miller’s tale (about Bruce Wayne resurrecting his identity as the Caped Crusader, to battle a new threat).
Speaking of Miller’s influence, note the distinct similarities and differences between Bane’s militaristic campaign against Gotham City in Dark Knight Rises and the hellfire reigned down by the Mutants in Dark Knight Returns (that highlights the influence of Miller’s original story on Nolan’s film).
Joining Weller is David Selby as Commissioner Gordon, Ariel Winter as Robin, Wade Williams as Two-Face and Michael McKean as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper. The film is directed by Jay Oliva, written by Bob Goodman and executive produced by Sam Register and the legendary Bruce Timm.
Warners and DC are splitting up the adaptation of the dense four-part graphic novel into two animated features titled Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 and Part 2. The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 hits DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Download on September 25th, 2012. Part 2 should arrive in early 2013.
