‘Sinister‘ Trailer - Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

Sinister, a highly-buzzed about horror film that won over critics and fans at a surprise SXSW screening earlier this year, where critics praised its slow-burn style of suspense and satisfying scares. Unfortunately, the feature’s first trailer disregards the former, falling into the horror marketing convention of stuffing the trailer with creepy imagery and jump scares.

Judging by the trailer, Sinister relies on several tried-and-true tropes of the horror genre (including, the young daughter who forms a “friendship” with one of the ghosts), but could serve up some effective jump scares and disturbing moments.
Derrickson also appears poised to do a good job building suspense and heightening the fear factor, as Hawke’s writer slowly uncovers increasingly-terrifying details about just what exactly is this monster he’s unleashed upon his loved ones.
Sinister probably won’t renovate that premise of horror, but it has potential to be an overall fun and scary viewing experience, for the upcoming Halloween season.
