‘Dredd‘ Trailer - In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

Lionsgate’s marketing has just started to get underway for Dredd, a reboot of the Judge Dredd movie franchise that kicked off with the (in)famous Sylvester Stallone vehicle in 1995. Whether or not you’ve seen the original 1995 Stallone film Judge Dredd, there’s good reason to be intrigued by the upcoming remake, which is going simply by the name Dredd.

This new interpretation of the comic book property is leaner and meaner in every manner conceivable – including, a tighter budget, more down n’ dirty look, and a version of the eponymous anti-hero (Karl Urban) who’s less bulky and emotionally-vulnerable (re: we never see his face, just like in the comics).

This first official trailer likewise illustrates the film’s grittier aesthetic – with a growlier protagonist and nastier villain, played by Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey – plus, a straightforward storyline that does appear to unfold in a manner akin to this year’s cult-hit Indonesian thriller, The Raid: Redemption (a.k.a. The Raid).

Judge Dredd, played by Kiwi actor Karl Urban in this one, takes on the hardened criminals of Mega City with guns, guns and more guns, and it looks totally badass.

In the original Judge Dredd movie the character wears a helmet, and in the comics he never takes it off– but even though they’ve compromised by showing the lower half of Urban’s face, it still takes a lot away from his charisma and from any attachment you can develop for the character.

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets.

The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan.

When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire.

With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.
