SoundWorks Collection has put together a tremendous resource for those interested in sound and sound design, and this behind-the-scene video detailing the sound design in Prometheus is no exception. Through clips and interviews with the sound crew, we gain some insight into how the sounds of the film were generated.

While the debate rages on between those who liked Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and those who just found too many problems for the good aspects to overcome, there seems to be unanimous praise of technical aspect of the film including production design and visual effects. But perhaps one of the unsung heroes is the sound of Prometheus.

Though the camera, lighting, and set design can certainly affect the quality of a production, more often than not it is the sound design that separates a film from the pack. Sound has an unbelievable ability to not only surround an audience in the atmosphere of the film, but also transport them in a way that images cannot. Like many big-budget science fiction and action films, sound plays an important role in Prometheus.

It’s quite an extensive look at the behind-the-scene creation of various sounds in the film, including use some from Alien, complete with commentary from sound editors, sound designers, sound re-recording mixers, and more.

I think everyone who sees Prometheus will agree that the film is beautifully made, from the perspective of how Ridley Scott and his crew created the film’s environments and settings. Visually, Prometheus is absolutely stunning and almost flawless, and that design is complemented by an expertly-crafted sonic palette.

If you haven’t seen it yet, it certainly is one of those films that deserves a viewing for its production design alone.
