The Last Of Us E3 2012 Gameplay Trailer Features A Shotgun To The Head.
What happens when you put a shotgun to someone’s face and pull the trigger? Well, that situation is put to the test in the new third-person shooter from Naughty Dog, The Last of Us. The game is a semi-fast-paced shooter set in a post-apocalyptic future where vegetable zombies run amok.
The E3 gameplay trailer doesn’t really focus on the vegetable zombies, though. No sir-ree, the vegetable zombies are no where to be seen in the trailer. Why? Because the focus is on the nasty humans who troll empty apartments, hotels and other places just looking for loot to survive. Obviously, though, their foul mouths give them away as being evil looters so…well…shotgun to the face, anyone?

At this point in the story Joel and Ellie are attempting to get to the bridge and out of the city. They are tourists in an area that’s controlled by hunters. They are hunted and yet they too are hunters. Everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to survive. What you’ll see is something that we’re calling Balance of Power AI. Enemies will react realistically to whatever situation your combat style forces them into. Playing as Joel, Ellie’s help and whatever weapons you can scavenge are your best shot at progressing in this brutal, violent world.
The drive to preserve humanity against the infection creates tension that pushes the limits of what constitutes being human. The story will explore the bond that forms between Joel and Ellie, and themes of loyalty, love, and redemption in ways never before experienced in entertainment. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that plunges and twists into the depths of what it means to be human and what it takes to survive.
Naughty Dog did an amazing job crafting the universe and the constant cinematic nature and feel of the game, setting a proper mood, tone, and stage for the debut of The Last of Us gameplay. My only gripe is that we’ve just come off the huge success of a mod called DayZ and it’s basically just like The Last Of Us except it doesn’t have vegetable zombies and fungus growing everywhere. The other big difference is that The Last Of Us feels slightly underwhelming due to the fact that you can get shoot quite a bit and it doesn’t really affect you as if you desperately need to survive.
Still, The Last of Us is a good enough attempt to bring some sort of legitimacy back to the horror-survival or survival-adventure genre and I’m sure PS3 fans will eat the game right up this fall.
