Nintendo has shown, named and demonstrated an evolved Wii U GamePad and Xbox-like Pro Controller in a pre-E3 video announcement. Now has proper, clicky analogue sticks.
Nintendo has made some notable tweaks and revisions to the prototype version detailed last year at E3, adding a new NFC reader and writer, motion and gyroscope sensors, and fully-independent infrared TV remote functionality.
The evolved Wii U GamePad has two longer analogue sticks instead of the circle pads the prototype device featured last year at E3. The sticks can now be clicked down, too.
The GamePad’s buttons and handgrips have been moved around to make it more comfortable to use.
There’s a TV Control button that, when pressed, transfers the telly’s image to the GamePad screen or vice versa. The GamePad can also act as a television remote once the Wii U console is turned off.
The GamePad also has an NFC reader/writer that can decipher and do wonderful, magical things with cards or figurines placed on the screen.
There are gyroscopic and motion sensors, too. You can use the Wiimote, nunchuck and Balance Board with Wii U.
The Wii U GamePad got its name from the original NES game pad.
The forward-facing camera is confirmed to be used for Wii U’s built-in video chat. The controller will also be able to access a web browser to surf the Internet and send web pages to the TV screen, complete with a fancy velvet curtain graphic effect to make reveals a surprise.
The stylus is still there, and Nintendo once again showed off footage of someone sketching Link’s face to demonstrate its functionality as an art pad.
The Wii U Gamepad and the Wii U console were shown in both black and white variations, though its unclear if the company will offer other color selections as well.
The Mario-maker also unveiled a black Wii U Pro Controller, which looks almost identical to an Xbox 360 pad in shape and layout, to cater for games that have not been optimized for the Wii U.
The conference also offered new insights into the Wii U’s new online network and social features, Miiverse. More details about the system are expected to be revealed at Nintendo’s E3 press conference on Tuesday at 9:00am PST.
