The Last of Us – Truck Ambush Trailer

UPDATE: Naughty Dog has commented on the decision to change the look of Ellie. Creative director Neil Druckmann told IGN that change was made to make Ellie look more like Ashley Johnson, the mo-cap artist and voice actor behind Ellie.

“After delving further into the game’s narrative over the past few months, we decided to modify Ellie’s model to better reflect Ashley’s personality, and also resemble a slightly younger teen more fitting to the story,” Druckmann explained. “We’re happy with the final result shown in the cinematic we have released today, and hope the fans like her too.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Naughty Dog’s about to tell the story of Joel and Ellie, but it seems the monsters seen in the debut trailer aren’t the only dangers in The Last of Us.

Naughty Dog has unveiled another CGI trailer for their upcoming PS3 exclusive The Last of Us. Ellie and Joel, survivors of an apocalyptic plague, encounter a new danger in their journey through the ruins of the United States.

Dubbed “The Truck Ambush,” it sees Ellie fooled by a man faking injury, but Joel seeing through it.

While the humans turned into mindless freaks by the outbreak are a threat, they’re not the only problem that the duo has to contend with. Because civilization has broken down, essential supplies like food and water are running low. As this trailer demonstrates, fellow survivors can be just as vicious as any infected.

I’ve been really impressed by the trailers for this game thus far. They’re short but effective. You really get a sense of what Ellie and Joel’s day-to-day life must be like in this post-apocalyptic environment.

One thing we did notice, however, is a slight tweak to Ellie’s looks. It looks like Naughty Dog went with a little less “Ellen Page” and tried to make her look just a little older than we’ve seen her before. The changes are, though subtle, but definitely noticeable. Once heavily modelled on Juno actress Ellen Page, the new Ellie has now lost her freckles and gained a different shaped nose. Tell us what you think of her new look in the comment section below.

The Last of Us is expected either later this year or early next year. I imagine we’ll hear a whole lot more when E3 rolls around.
