If you’re still reeling from the awful Operation Racoon City, get ready for a little pick me up in the form of a new trailer for Resident Evil 6, a trailer that reveals some big new plot details.
The trailer released during the Capcom’s Captivate 2012 event, reveals that the game will involve an outbreak of a new mutation-spreading virus, this time called the C-Virus, and it looks to be the work of Ada Wong, who would appear firmly sat in the antagonist camp this time.

If you can’t decide who’s the dreamier Resident Evil protagonist, Leon Kennedy or Chris Redfield, you’re in luck: In Resident Evil 6 you get to play both. Moreover, for the first time in series history, metro government agent Leon and rough-and-ready Chris will meet face to face, and the epic meeting is expected to set off some exciting sparks.
Resident Evil 6 introduces multiple playable characters to the series, each with their own distinctive style of play. The game features three playable characters – Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and Jake Muller – with three unique, intertwining stories that the player can choose to play through in any order. While the action takes place in various locations around the world, we do know that a large portion is set in China.

If you’re wondering who Jake Muller is, he is a new character, a mercenary in Eastern Europe, and wait for it… Wesker Jr. Yep, he’s also the son of maniacal sunglasses advocate, Albert Wesker, which would explain his super powered combat. Quite how he will ultimately fit into the RE story arc, and if Albert Wesker will return is unclear. Jake’s adventure will be a little different than any previous RE outing, as he specialises in melee combat, and this will be reflected in his campaign. Each of the campaigns will be playable in any order, and just as in Resident Evil 2, actions within one campaign may affect those in the others.

Also returning is Sherry Birkin, who looks to partner up with Wesker Jr. And, to many a fan’s delight, we may even see Leon and Chris go head to head. It’s all kicking off, make no mistake.
We saw a playthrough of some of Leon’s story, set in Tall Oaks University after a bio-terrorist attack that turns the American President into a zombie, forcing Leon to kill him and subsequently face the blame for his murder (that might sound like a spoiler for the whole plot but this all happened in the first four minutes).

Little things we noticed include the return of proper zombies. These aren’t brainwashed villagers – their skin is falling off, they love hiding behind corners and they make noises like neglected drains. We also noticed that the interface has been streamlined to make things like changing weapons and consuming green herbs easier on the fly. There are also more shooting controls, such as the ability to fire while laying on your back, and some fun contextual attacks. We also learned that Resident Evil 6 features drop-in and drop-out co-op throughout, both locally in split-screen and online.

The second trailer of Resident Evil 6 also confirms that its release date brought forward to early October, with a demo of the latest in the survival horror series coming early this summer. Originally slated for worldwide release on November 20 this year, it’s now due out on October 2.
“First, let me say that we’re not really afraid of other companies and their titles,” answered Resident Evil 6′s executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi when asked if there was any game in particular that had prompted the change.
“The problem for us is when we brought this idea to the dev team and told them they’d have to cut some time off of their dev cycle to put this out early – that was the scariest thing, not the fear of other company’s games.”
“After we announced the game back in January, the reaction from fans was pretty impressive,” continued producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi. “In response to that, we decided that we wanted to get this game in people’s hands as soon as possible.”
A demo will be released later this year, with those who buy Capcom’s forthcoming RPG Dragon’s Dogma getting early access. A token will be included in all new copies of the game upon its release on May 25 (May 22 in America) with the demo being made available for download on July 3 on Xbox 360 and September 4 on PS3.
